College and Career Planning Checklist
College Pathway
The college pathway may include a two-year college, four-year university, or career and technical college program.

The Common Application allows students to apply to many colleges and universities in Texas and across the country using one application.
Military Pathway
Military service may provide career training, work experience, leadership opportunities, and education benefits.
Careers That Value Military Experience
Some career fields prefer or strongly value military experience due to the leadership, discipline, and specialized training it provides. These may include positions in government and public service, such as political offices, as well as careers with agencies like the FBI and U.S. Border Patrol.
Armed Services Vocational Aptitude Battery
The Armed Services Vocational Aptitude Battery, also known as the ASVAB, is offered once each semester in the College & Career Center.
Students may take the ASVAB:
- For fun or curiosity
- To explore their strengths and career interests
- To learn about military careers
- Because they are considering military service
Taking the ASVAB does not require or commit a student to joining the military.
Military Education Benefits
GI Bill: Eligible service members, veterans, and family members may receive financial support for college, career training, or other education programs.
Hazlewood Act: A Texas benefit that may provide eligible veterans, spouses, and dependent children with up to 150 credit hours of tuition exemptions at public colleges and universities in Texas. It does not cover books, housing, or supplies.
Career Exploration Pathway
The career pathway may include skilled trades, apprenticeships, career training, national service, or entering the workforce.
Skilled Trades and Career Training
Skilled-trade programs can prepare students for careers in electrical work, plumbing, welding, construction, automotive technology, health care, technology, and other fields.
Apprenticeships may combine classroom instruction with paid, on-the-job training.
