Planning to Study Outside the United States

Students may study abroad through a United States college or earn a full degree from a university in another country. Students should begin planning in the fall of their junior year and carefully review each university’s application, testing, visa, and financial aid requirements.

Common App includes participating universities in the United States and other countries. UCAS is the main application system for universities in the United Kingdom. Universities not listed here require you to apply directly through their websites.

Choose Your Study Option

Study Abroad Through a United States College

You remain enrolled at a United States college and attend an approved program in another country for a semester, summer, or academic year.

Before selecting a program, ask:

• Will the courses count toward my degree?
• Can I use my current financial aid?
• What are the travel, housing, insurance, and visa costs?

Earn a Full Degree Outside the United States

You apply directly to an international university and complete your entire degree outside the United States.

Research:

• Application and essay requirements
• Tuition and living expenses
• Entrance or language exams
• Whether the degree will be recognized for your future career
• Financial aid and scholarship options

AP, SAT, and ACT Scores

Many international universities use Advanced Placement, SAT, or ACT scores for admission, course placement, or college credit. Requirements vary by country, university, and degree program.

Always check the university’s website before sending scores.

Student Visas

After you are accepted, you may need to apply for a student visa. The university’s international student office can usually help explain the process.

You may need:

Study Abroad Through a United States College

A study-abroad program allows you to remain enrolled at a United States college while taking approved courses in another country. 

Full Degree at an International University

Some international universities participate in the United States federal student loan program. Eligible students may qualify for:

• Parent PLUS Loans

Federal Pell Grants cannot be used for a full degree at an international university.
